Title: A tribute to the Ancestors
|
InspirationFrank Stella:
Stella is a American artist who wanted people to see his own art of geometric shapes and forms, in a different perspective and see art as not just an image, however, more abstract. In addition, give interpretation to the audiences on what they think and perceive what the object is. Also, see different art pieces as flat or as a 3d form to stand out, and to get people interested why a geometric shape is used rather than portraying a real object. With different intertwining forms, showing his own confusion of what he perceives of things, having different textures to add to the contrast as well as color to contrast from the blank canvas or space. |
Lao, Hmong and American Veterans Memorial:
My other inspiration was including the geometric shapes from the Hmong people into my artwork as well as the colors. With the yellow, red, and green meaning the rivers that the Hmong had cross from migrating to different lands to show their homeland. Moreover, with red for passion, green for life, and yellow and white as prosperity for the Hmong people. These colors influencing my artwork by having these colors with the same meanings to show the homeland of Hmong people and to give geometric contrast and form similar to Frank Stella's abstract works. Also, the paj ntaub (Hmong textiles) influence within my own piece to showcase the Hmong people of who they are. Lastly, the memorial having these significant meaning to showcase the Hmong and add meaning similar to my own site specific piece of wanting to give a memorial to the Hmong people who influenced in Milwaukee, from Milwaukee having a few pieces. |
Moreover, create illusions within the piece to get people to become interested in what they are seeing. Additionally, get the audience a sense of confusion as well as curiosity in what they are viewing from the abstract work not depicting an image but a concept. This influencing my own sculpture of forcing people to be drawn in and question the surrounding places, and get people to see the names of Hmong who contributed in Wisconsin. Also, with my piece to give people to see themselves and interpret what the piece is and become curious in learning the Hmong people.

Planning Sketches:
Firstly, I sketched out, knowing I wanted a center of a Hmong textile panel, drawing different designs inspired by the original textiles. Additionally the colors in them to show the Hmong people, where they came from, and why they are important with their impact to the community of Milwaukee. Firstly wanting a form of a Miao headdress, but the connection wasn't strong for me, changing it to forms of mountains to showcase the Hmong and why they are here in Wisconsin, and where they came from which is the Mountains of Laos with the story of the Hmong. Also, with paj ntaub (embroidery) being important to the Hmong specifically in Wisconsin for selling the textiles and important for the economy of the 5XEN market which is the location of the building. as well as showing who are the Hmong. Lastly, adding the colors to show where the Hmong came from, and connect to who are the Hmong from the colors meaning passion and prosperity, putting these colors and arrange of shapes in my abstract piece to show the mountains.
Development Board:
Firstly, I wanted to put the installation in front of the Hmong market, 5XEN, to showcase who are the Hmong outside the building and give the place an area for a memorial due to the Hmong contribution to Milwaukee of adding to the community and contribution in the Secret and Vietnam War. Furthermore, an official sidewalk from the area not having any walkways as well as attracting people to go to 5XEN to help the small business of the Hmong community.
|
Moreover, people who are coming into Milwaukee and exploring the rich cultures it have, with Hmong inspirations being in only a few places, with the idea allowing people to see why are the Hmong important in Milwaukee, and how did they impact the city of Milwaukee by having names of people who are important to the community who are Hmong, as well as veterans that currently live or used to live in Milwaukee or in Wisconsin.
|
Process:
Firstly, I sketched out where I wanted everything, placing the board down then going in with a pencil and tracing where each section is going to be, cutting the base layers on top of another to show the sidewalks, grass, and streets. Then, I measured each panel, putting a toothpick structure to support the paper, then sketching out a rough design as a panel to fold and glue these panels together to give a more contrast from the textured pathways and colors to the smoother flat areas.
|
|
|
Then cutting out different shapes and forms of the color red, green, yellow, blue, and white, to show who are the Hmong people and why they are important. In addition, show the homeland of the Hmong people of having the abstract installation to portray the mountains where the Hmong had live. Adding a tree and different plant arrangements to show scale and give contrast to the smooth texture of the paper and board. Lastly, cleaning up by removing any glue strands and brushing off any dust or paper that wasn't there before.
|
Expirmentation:
Firstly, I experimented by not having a base structure inside the paper, having the panels glued together, with this, breaking apart and not having any form or structure to stay up by, then after adding the toothpick structure, helping the form stay better, and implementing this in my piece. Also I tried to freehand some of the shapes and form, this causing a rushed, looked, which led me to measure everything out and cutting the shape larger to make the piece look more crisp.
|
|
Reflection:
Overall, if I was to do this project again I would due to after the project, having more skills and the knowledge to make the piece look more flushed and crisp, as well as redoing many of the structures from not being precise, which added to the look crisp and clean. Furthermore, sticking to a specific idea due to the ideas all mixed in another and not complete like how I wanted. I enjoyed the overall layout and the forms of the different shapes that I used to showcase the Hmong people, and one thing I wish I did was measure out the parts more and had done and sketched out more positions of everything put onto the board. Additionally, I would want to change the overall look of lacking a lot of scale, from some of the areas larger than I imagined, as well as making each piece more crisp rather than jagged. Lastly, could of done the abstract part of using lighting to show the mountains in a better way than gluing shapes to give the impression of mountains.
Compare & Contrast:
Contrast:
- The themes are different from La Penna Di Hu was to show beauty of a peacock and get the audience to see the sculpture as a painting. Contrasting from A Tribute to the Ancestors of being a piece to commemorate the Hmong people, and their importance in Milwaukee. - The colors are different from Stella using Dayglo colors to show the frames see how it interacts with another, while in A tribute to the Ancestors uses colors and shape to show the Hmong identity and the Homeland of the mountains they lived. - La Penna Di Hu's intention was to look at a piece differently as a painting rather than sculpture as a abstract piece of work, contrasting in A tribute to the Ancestors the intention was to showcase the resilience of the Hmong and get people interested in learning who the Hmong are. |
Comparison:
- The concept is similar from both making people see the sculpture in another perspective. - Both contain geometric shapes that isn't meant to represent an actual picture or image, rather, an idea of what the object is. - Both sculptures want the audience to become more interested in what they are seeing and look at the piece in different perspectives to find their own meaning behind it. |
ACT Questions:
1) Clearly explain and describe how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
The cause effect relationship between my inspiration and it's effect on my artwork is the placing and use of colors to add meaning and shapes to create contrast to give the attention to the audience.
2) What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
My overall approach regarding the author and topic of my inspiration is how color can add meaning to a piece and how different shapes can create an illusion or make the audience perceive the piece another way.
3) What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Generalizations I've made was the use of art of Stella's use of shape to force the audience to look at the artwork differently by the different shapes being more abstraction of what the from is representing.
4) What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea of my inspirational research was use of shape, intent, and the colors involve inspired my research to showcase meaning behind the abstract piece.
5) What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research?
Conclusions made while reading my research was that the Hmong people used these colors throughout the piece due to at least some containing them and stories explaining the meaning. As well as Stella's purpose of wanting to force the audience of the piece in another way.
