Title: A Vibrant City
|
Inspiration:Edvard Munch:
Within Munch's art the time period he was in was during his Ekely period which was his permanent home, where he spend majority of his time. With it, his paintings were more blue tinted to show peace and harmony, as well as loneliness from him being alone and inspired by the play John Gabriel Borkman, by Henrik Ibsen. This is shown by him putting his own shadow in to symbolize himself and used short blended lines to show the peace of dying and hoping for peace. Moreover, used organic and geometric shapes to give contrast for depth into the artwork. Allowing the viewer to see his own loneness of the scenery empty and cold. |
Pha That Luang:
Pha That luang is a Lao Buddhist temple that is the National symbol of Laos. using this as a symbol in my own piece to show where my culture came from and showing the beauty and where I feel at piece at. Additionally, used for religious purposes and built from the capital moving to Vientiane, Laos, with it the building carried many lao and Mon-Khmer architect from temples. |
Planning Sketches
I wanted to replicate Munch's textured brush strokes of short and blended, as well as his long crisp lines using colored pencils. Seeing which texture I wanted, and sketching out how the textures of the plants and background is going to become. Moreover, from his paintings blue tinted to show his loneliness and peacefulness, I wanted to also use the colors of yellow and blue to show peace and a sense of serenity. Additionally sketching the form I wanted, due to wanting to implement the Pha That Luang and Hmong houses to showcase Laos and it's beauty, and playing out where I wanted each shape and form. Lastly, creating a color palette to see which colors represent or show the feeling of peace and beauty.
Process:
Firstly, I started with a light sketch, trying to draw out and plan where each form is going to be, and building up the background and foreground. Then I went in to color with the highlights, and slowly shading with the blues and greens to give a sense of blending into shades from the white color pencil from having translucent. Then, sketching out lines of the background and blending it out with the green color pencil to give a sense of peacefulness. Furthermore, went over with a white color pencil to blend it out more and keep using the blue and green color pencil to blend out, then finishing the edges with crisp opaque lines.

|
Later, I went in with an eraser and a violet color pencil to use as a highlight and shade to put depth and clean up any rough textured areas and to blend out areas. Moreover, going back in with the green blue to blend everything together to give a more sense of harmony between the colors. Lastly, going back in and cleaning any mistakes and feathering other lines to give texture in the piece that I wanted to give a sense of beauty and variance.
|
Expirmentation:
Firstly I experimented using different pressures of the eraser to blend out the colors, with it not working, and only creating a look that is more unblended and textured which I didn't want. Going back over the erased parts and redoing them, and going back over with the blue and green blue color pencil to further blend them together and blend it out. Also figuring out that the hardness of the color pencils from a light to a harder pressure better helps blend out the color, and going in an opposite direction to blend two colors.

|
I also tried putting the color pencil in water, which testing it gave the color pencil more vibrant colors and a watercolor look, that varied from the textured line. With it, putting it in the piece to give contrast from the heavily textured background and to blend the foreground more. Lastly, with the longer time in water, having this water color look for a longer time and use than for a few minutes.
|
Reflection:
Overall, If I was able to do this piece again I would of cleaned some of the edges better and have a deeper purple color to give more contrast from the blue similar to the purple, which led to the colors seeming blended and not contrasting. Additionally, used the eraser more to give a sense of lightness in the stars due to some of the parts blending in too much with the blue tint, rather than a deep white color. that I wanted. Additionally, testing the hardness of the color pencil before going in and later wanting to blend out the colors which gave it a more streaky look than I indented it to be.
