Title: The Change
|
Inspiration:
Pablo Picasso:
My inspiration was from Picasso's blue period, with majority of the painting was monochromatic, with colors that were muted. Additionally deals with a lot of shading which I wanted to implemented in my artwork of the different shades and hues within his artworks. Moreover, his use of theme tied to the color by this period having a theme of depression and sorrow and was more about emotion than his previous art he had styled in. Also, how he is able to create expressions on his figure to give a more depressed look and tie emotion to the figures with the position of the objects surrounding the main figure.

Planning Sketches
|
Firstly, I wanted to do the piece with emotions of the colors and have the emotion come out as sad and unhappy, picking the colors that have a more depressing connotation to it, leaving blue and black. I also wanted to incorporate what object I needed, sketching it out onto another page, as well as, sketching the main figure, and what position I wanted it in, and also, trying to create a proportionate look. Moreover, looking into using placement of each object to create more depth like in Picasso's artwork.
|
Process
FIrstly, I started with a light sketch of where each object and figure is going to go, using a ruler to create a straighter edge of the wall and table. Then, I colored everything with a lighter shade of blue to give everything a blue undertone. Afterwards, I kept adding layers of different shades of blue by changing the hardness of how I applied the lines, and adding a black to create a darker tone. Afterwards I went in with a yellow to compliment the monochromatic painting of majority of blue. Then going in with the same blue color and lightly going into circular motions and lines to create a blended look, then going in with a highlight of a white or shade of a black. Then polishing it up with the blue to get a more polished look.
|
Experimentation:
One thing I started was with a more muted blue, seeing that I didn't like it I switch into the brighter blue to give an allusion that what everything seems like on the outside as fine while in reality, the themes of being hold back from the tape over the mouth and expression of the character. Also, continued to go into the artwork with a black to give more of a darker tone ti give a sense of being tight, to show how the issue is hard to get out of. Additionally, trying to blend the colors out due to applying the hardness, later going in with a black to give more depth.

Reflection:
Overall, I enjoyed the process of this piece of the varying textures. A challenging part was to create more depth into the work by having the second layer more waxy from applying the color more harder, and also part of the blending by not fully going into it . If I was to do this I would of create more layers to create depth into the painting, and then adding a darker blue and muted tone on the table to give more of a sadder look from the blue. Furthermore, polishing the blue out due to some areas being streaky. This theme and concept opposing the positive piece of Pathway to Home by themes contrasting and having less brighter tones in the painting.
Compare & Contrast:
Compare:
- Both use the color blue to create a sense of despair and depression to have a gloomy look. - Both deals with a theme surrounding how depression can occur, and how art was used to relief it. - Uses a yellow or brown hue to vary it from the monochromatic background to add emphasis onto it. -Uses blacks to outline each object to give more depth. - Both uses varying texture to give depth into the artwork and to separate the main subject from the background. |
Contrast:
- The use of the color blue. In The Blind Man's Meal, the blue is representing the depressive state Picasso felt and to show the emotion of sorrow, while in The Change, the color blue was used to show the oppression that Hmong people have felt, and being shunned to speak their minds. - In The Blind Man's Meal, it deals with how the poor was affected and shedding light into it, while The Change is trying to show how many of the Hmong youth feel shunned from speaking from their society. - The blind Man's Meal uses more muted colors to allude to the theme of depression, and sorrow, while in The change uses more bright, but sadder tones to give the allusion that not everything seems as it is. - The Change has more textures to give more depth, as well as, to create variance, while in The blind man's meal, more shading is achieve by use of different shades of the blue color, and blending some textures out, and different placement of the objects that had created the depth. |
ACT Questions:
1) Clearly explain and describe how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork.
The cause effect relationship between my inspiration and it's effect on my atwork is the placing and use of colors to create emotion within a painting.
2) What is the overall approach (point of view) the author (from your research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
My overall approach regarding the author and topic of my inspiration is how the emotions can be express by the monochromatic style and proportions changed along with the expressions, to show emotion.
3) What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
Generalizations I've made was the use of art of Picasso doing it to show an underlying theme of depression due to having his friend die which had affected him mentally.
4) What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea of my inspirational research was use of color and texture to create emotions, and having a darker topic surrounding the artwork. Moreover, themes of sorrow of the emotions connected to the color blue.
5) What kind of inferences (conclusions reached on the basis of evidence and reasoning) did you make while reading your research?
Conclusions made while reading my research was that his artwork during the blue period dealt with his depression due to majority being dull colors and the period coming right after his friend dying, moreover, his use of blue by having everything a blue undertone.
